Battle for supremacy at bottom

Preview

Group A Match

Canada versus Zimbabwe

Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur

Start Time: 9:30 am (IST)

Monday’s encounter between Canada and Zimbabwe battle for supremacy at the bottom of group A table as both teams would like to have a win under the belt.

Both sides go into the game after getting mauled from stronger opposition. While Sri Lanka had it easy against Canada, Zimbabwe crumbled quickly to fast bowlers of Australia.

The tie between two weaker sides has its own significance as it gives players from both sides a chance to showcase their talent and skills.

There is no dearth of talented players on the both sides but it will be Zimbabwe that will start the match as overwhelming favourites for they have some experience of playing bigger teams.

Zimbabwe

The team might not have strength that it had in 1999 and 2003n editions but does possess some serious talent.

The batting line-up combusted against searing pace of Australian seamers and showed no fight.

Opener Brendon Taylor, Tatenda Taibu and skipper Elton Chigumbura all have in them to score against any team and relatively weaker bowling attack of Canada should provide them opportunity to make amends for their batting failures against Australia in their first world cup game.

It will be spin attack that has experience of left arm spinner Ray price and miserly off-spinner Prosper Utseya that makes Zimbabwe a far better side than Canada.

The duo and leg-spinner Craig Cremer displayed their skills against strong Aussie batting line-up and were able keep them under check.

Fast bowler Christopher Mpofu also did a decent job and would like to be amongst the wickets against Canada.

Squad: Elton Chigumbura (Capt.), Charles Coventry, Craig Ervine, Tim Mawoya, Craig Cremer, Tatenda Taibu (Wkt), Greg Lamb, Prosper Utseya, Chris Mpofu, Rainsford, Rekis Chakabwa, Brendon Taylor, Sean Williams, Shingirai Maskadsa and Ray Price.

Coach: Alan Butcher

Canada

The inexperience of Canada was palpable during their clash against Sri Lanka. Bowlers were taken apart and batsmen lacked skill and patience to fight to do well against strong bowling unit.

They lost their best bowler Henry Osinde early in the piece against Sri Lanka to cramps and it will be seen whether he takes field on Monday or not.

Skipper Ashish Bagai showed some heart against Sri Lanka but it was, as expected, Rizwan Cheema who scored 35- ball 37to save Canada from embarrassment.

He would like to display his hitting prowess again and enhance his reputation as someone who has an ability to hit a long ball.

Real test for Canadian batting will be against the Zimbabwean spinners and if they play against them a good match is going to be on cards.
