World Cup Head to head: Played: 1, Wins: Pakistan 1, Canada 0

World Cup Last meeting: June 9, 1979 - Canada 9-139 (60 ov) def by Pakistan 2-140 (40.1 ov) by eight wickets

SELECTION TABLE:

Likely Pakistan team: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal (wk), Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi (c), Abdul Razzaq, Abdur Rehman, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar,

Akhtar could be given a rest given his recent record with injury and if so may be replaced by Wahab Riaz, but Pakistan should enter the match with largely the same line-up that impressed against Sri Lanka.

Likely Canada team: Nitish Kumar, John Davison, Ashish Bagai (c & wk), Zubin Surkari, Jimmy Hansra, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Tyson Gordon, Rizwan Cheema, Harvir Baidwan, Khurram Chohan, Balaji Rao

Despite the temptation of playing youth in a match where they easily expected to lose, Canada are likely to stick with the same side that were thumped by Zimbabwe as they look to regain some pride. Davison could be on his last chance and needs some runs.

X-FACTOR:

Pakistan: Shahid Afridi - With nine wickets from just two matches, Afridi is proving a real threat with the ball, and if he gets a chance with the bat, could destroy the Canadian bowlers.

Canada: John Davison - Despite failing to make a run in the tournament so far, he has the experience to deliver and needs to score runs to maintain his place

SUMMARY:

Another one-sided contest is expected when Pakistan clash with Canada in Colombo on Thursday.

The two sides could not have had more different preparations to the fixture. Pakistan have won both their matches, including a terrific victory against Sri Lanka that gave their fans hope of a successful tournament.

On the other hand, Canada have been thumped in both of their World Cup fixtures so far and will be particularly embarrassed by a 175-run towelling at the hands of Zimbabwe.

Pakistan cricket is finally looking forward after the spot-fixing saga that saw Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir given bans from the sport and captain Afridi is part of the reason why things are looking up for the Asian country.

After a five-wicket haul against Kenya, Afridi took four match-winning wickets against Sri Lanka and has energised the side with his refreshing brand of captaincy.

Kamran Akmal is enjoying his role at No.3 while Khan and Misbah have made successive half-centuries and are in top form.

Given the strength of the Pakistan batting line-up, the match could once again get ugly for Canada if they bowl first.

Balaji claimed four wickets against Zimbabwe and will need to bowl well again while the likes of Chohan and Cheema will need to step up and be more consistent if they are to stand any chance.
