Time : 11 : 42

More than the entertainment foregone by the spectators, the rain at the Premadasa washed out what could have been valuable batting practice for the middle order in conditions with swing, turn and bounce. The last game had been set up for a middle-order-based recovery, with Sangakkara easing into an innings-building knock, around which the likes of Thillan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva and Angelo Mathews could have grown some scores.
Mathews has been undercooked for some time now – in his last 9 matches, his highest score has been 36, and he has missed out on getting a bat as many as 4 times. Silva has been unused in 5 of the last 10 outings (although it dare be said he got in some good time in the middle during his dour innings of 57 against Pakistan).
The Lankan spinners too were robbed of a confidence-generating haul on a wicket that had been turning square for the Australian spinners. Lasith Malinga should have another steamroll on Thursday against the Zimbabweans, who are traditionally used to bounce (not that any batsman can get acclimatized to handling the swinging yorker). It will be interesting to see if Sri Lanka choose to go with three spinner – the tactic they had planned to attack Australia with – or return to the usually successful, tried and tested approach of Nuwan Kulasekara sharing the new ball.
